The Bathers Way runs about 6 kilometres from Merewether Ocean Baths to Nobbys Beach. Pick any short section: past the Bogey Hole, the pool convicts cut from the rock for Major James Morisset in 1819, or on to the art deco Newcastle Ocean Baths. Merewether Ocean Baths opened in 1935, and two of its pools are free to the public.
If the wind is up, Blackbutt Reserve near Kotara and New Lambton offers 182 hectares of bush with seven signposted walking trails, and entry is free. The resident koalas sleep most of the day, so you will have plenty of time to talk.
